The N. Waldo Harrison Professorship was established in 1987 by Virginia Tech College of Engineering alumnus Nathaniel Waldo Harrison. Harrison graduated from Virginia Tech. formerly known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), in 1934, the end of the depression, with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was then awarded a Teaching Fellowship in the VPI Applied Mechanics Department from where obtained a Masters Degrees in 1935.〔(''N.
